Systems Neuroscience: Shaping the Reward Prediction Error Signal
A recent study shows that midbrain GABA (inhibitory) neurons code for environmentally predicted rewards. These GABA neurons communicate with dopamine neurons, where the reward prediction is subtracted from delivered reward. Thus, the GABA prediction signal shapes the dopamine reward prediction error signal.
متن کاملMidbrain Dopamine Neurons Encode a Quantitative Reward Prediction Error Signal
The midbrain dopamine neurons are hypothesized to provide a physiological correlate of the reward prediction error signal required by current models of reinforcement learning. We examined the activity of single dopamine neurons during a task in which subjects learned by trial and error when to make an eye movement for a juice reward. We found that these neurons encoded the difference between th...
متن کاملDopamine reward prediction error coding
Reward prediction errors consist of the differences between received and predicted rewards. They are crucial for basic forms of learning about rewards and make us strive for more rewards-an evolutionary beneficial trait. Most dopamine neurons in the midbrain of humans, monkeys, and rodents signal a reward prediction error; they are activated by more reward than predicted (positive prediction er...
متن کاملDopamine reward prediction error signal codes the temporal evaluation of a perceptual decision report.
Learning to associate unambiguous sensory cues with rewarded choices is known to be mediated by dopamine (DA) neurons. However, little is known about how these neurons behave when choices rely on uncertain reward-predicting stimuli. To study this issue we reanalyzed DA recordings from monkeys engaged in the detection of weak tactile stimuli delivered at random times and formulated a reinforceme...
متن کاملReward Prediction Error in Online Game Trades
We use trade data from an online game economy to test the dopaminergic reward prediction error (DRPE) hypothesis: upon buying a game item at a price which is obviously too low, a player should become more active in the trading market. We find that players are more willing to buy goods in the in-game market after such an trade incident. Hence, the effect predicted by the DRPE model is visible. Y...
